ORGANISATIONS & UNITS
The Allied Intelligence BureauÂ
All intelligence-related activities in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) were by mid 1943, coordinated by the Allied Intelligence Bureau.
In 1943, AIB consisted of:
Section A - ISD (briefly), followed by Special Operations Australia (SOA) responsible for obtaining information about the enemy and carrying out acts of sabotage. Later SOA would be given the cover name Services Reconnaissance Department (SRD)
Section B - Secret Intelligence Australia (SIA) was in effect an Australian branch of the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS).
Section CÂ - Combined Field Intelligence Service was based on the coastwatcher organisation. Later, it also included the Philippines Regional Section (PRS) and NEFIS III (Netherlands Foreign Intelligence Service)
Section D - Psychological Warfare. The two main organisations under Section D were the Australian Far Eastern Liaison Office (FELO) and the US Psychological Warfare Bureau (PWB). These two organisations often operated on a joint basis.
Â
There were other headquarters units falling under these four main sections, such as NEA, NWA, etc. but apart from various references to them, a deep exploration of their function, personnel and history fall outside the scope of the SOA website.
