TRAINING

The nature of Special Operations and Intelligence activities in the South West Pacific Area necessitated special training for all operatives sent into the field. Ordinary military training, while providing a solid base for clandestine work, was insufficient for special operations and field intelligence missions into enemy-held territory. Operational requirements and security considerations necessitated the establishment of Special Training Schools, usually under a cover name, where instruction in specialist techniques, methods and equipment could be given to recruits joining special organisations from other services or from civilian life. In general, recruits had to be taught special methods of insertion and exfiltration, how to operate alone or in small parties, how to maintain effective communications using equipment, and how to live in the jungle and work with natives.
